Low Virial Parameters in Molecular Clouds: Implications for High Mass Star Formation and Magnetic Fields

چکیده
Whether or not molecular clouds and embedded cloud fragments are stable against collapse is of utmost importance for the study of the star formation process. Only “supercritical” cloud fragments are able to collapse and form stars. The virial parameter α = Mvir/M , which compares the virial to the actual mass, provides one way to gauge stability against collapse. Supercritical cloud fragments are characterized by α . 2, as indicated by a comprehensive stability analysis considering perturbations in pressure and density gradients. Past research has suggested that virial parameters α & 2 prevail in clouds. This would suggest that collapse towards star formation is a gradual and relatively slow process, and that magnetic fields are not needed to explain the observed cloud structure. Here, we review a range of very recent observational studies that derive virial parameters ≪ 2 and compile a catalogue of 1325 virial parameter estimates. Low values of α are in particular observed for regions of high mass star formation (HMSF). These observations may argue for a more rapid and violent evolution during collapse. This would enable “competitive accretion” in HMSF, constrain some models of “monolithic collapse”, and might explain the absence of high–mass starless cores. Alternatively, the data could point at the presence of significant magnetic fields ∼ 1 mG at high gas densities. We examine to what extent the derived observational properties might be biased by observational or theoretical uncertainties. For a wide range of reasonable parameters, our conclusions appear to be robust with respect to such biases. Subject headings: ISM: clouds; methods: data analysis; stars: formation

Inefficient star formation through turbulence, magnetic fields and feedback
Star formation is inefficient. Only a few percent of the available gas in molecular clouds forms stars, leading to the observed low star formation rate (SFR). The same holds when averaged over many molecular clouds, such that the SFR of whole galaxies is again surprisingly low. Indeed, considering the low temperatures, molecular clouds should be highly gravitationally unstable and collapse on t...
متن کاملMagnetically Regulated Star Formation in Turbulent Clouds
We investigate numerically the combined effects of supersonic turbulence, strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion on cloud evolution leading to star formation. We find that, in clouds that are initially magnetically subcritical, supersonic turbulence can speed up star formation, through enhanced ambipolar diffusion in shocks. The speedup overcomes a major objection to the standard scenar...
متن کاملSome Constraints on The Formation of Globular Clusters
We explore the constraints on globular cluster formation provided by the observed conditions in starbursts where globulars are currently forming, and by the observed properties of young and old globular clusters. We note that the pressure in the ISM of starbursts and mergers implies that molecular clouds in these environments have radii similar to those of globular clusters. Such molecular clou...

A number of different formation scenarios have been proposed to explain the formation of stars with masses larger than about 8 M⊙. These include formation through the merger of less massive stars (Coalescence model) or through the accretion of unbound gas from the molecular cloud (Competitive accretion model). In the third scenario, Core accretion model, massive stars form through gravitational...
متن کاملTesting the Paradigm of Low-Mass Star Formation
Protostellar core formation is probably much more dynamic, and magnetic fields are probably much less important, than has been previously assumed in the standard model of low-mass star formation. This revised picture has important consequences: it is easier to understand the observed rapidity of star formation in molecular clouds; cores are more likely to have structures favoring high infall ra...
